The way a suspension system works is it limits the shock and vibration from the road surface that would otherwise be transferred into the driver and passenger compartments of the vehicle. It also keeps the tyres on the road surface at all times. This is important because if the wheels were to lose contact with the road, the vehicle would lose a lot of traction and become very difficult to control.
In the suspension system there is sprung and unsprung mass:- Sprung mass is any part held up by the springs e.g. the body, frame, engine etc.- Unsprung mass is the components that follow the roads surface changes e.g wheels, tyres, brakes etc.
The main job of a car's suspension set up is to maximize friction between the tyres and the road surface. This ensures that the car will handle as effectively as possible.
In class what we did was inspected the shock absorbers for leaks and damage to see if they would be good to keep using. We also took the a strut assembly out of a vehicle to inspect it. We found that everything was fine.
